Last year we had six known incidents of fraudulent tax notifications and attempted filings. They began in mid to late March of 2015 and went through late in the year. My notification (yes, I was one of the six… lucky me) was well into the summer. This year, we have already received one and it is not even March yet. These guys are working hard this year as the IRS has just recently allowed tax payers to file.

Notice there is a website to verify your identity. We would expect there may be fraudulent websites similar to this site as well… do not get careless and be sure to give us a call if you receive any fishy tax information!

Below are five things scammers often do that the real IRS would never do.

• Angrily demand immediate payment over the phone, nor will the agency call about taxes owed without first having mailed you a bill.
• Threaten to bring in local police or other law-enforcement groups to have you arrested for not paying.
• Demand that you pay taxes without giving you the opportunity to question or appeal the amount they say you owe.
• Require you to use a specific payment method for your taxes, such as a prepaid debit card.
• Ask for credit or debit card numbers over the phone.

We are not aware of anyone who has had more than an inconvenience (most likely will have to file paper, not electronically) from these notifications.
