“Video Week” Friday … Columbus Day Monday Bank/Postal JK Holiday, Local Cross Border Rivalry and Fair Reminder

Happy Video Week Friday!

The way the calendar fell this week, we ended up with back to back videos of the September Review, and then the Q 4 Newsletter Audio Video review, with a cameo appearance of Chacca the dog as he interrupted the recording of the Newsletter Video!

Hope you enjoyed…

This is a unique holiday in that Capital Markets will be open (light trading) but most banks and the post office, as well as our office will be closed.

Since banks are closed, money will not move Monday, even with the Capital Markets open…

Those in the Dallas Fort Worth Area – do not forget – Texas V Oklahoma University is this weekend and the Monday Columbus day marks Texas State Fair Day for most of the surrounding schools – Be Careful out there, it will be great fun over the long weekend but lots of traffic unfamiliar with the area!

Enjoy your weekend and talk to you next week!

Have a Great “Columbus Day Weekend” Day!

Matthew, take it easy … Columbus Monday Bank Holiday … Friday

Earlier this week, word was received of an evacuation of a relative in the Sunshine state. Later several communications from friends who were taking cover but staying put as they were out of the path. Heck, my most recent trip of last week may get visited by Matthew’s footprint.

This from the Weather Channel:

Matthew, take it easy please !

Everyone be safe!

Columbus Day

Monday is Columbus Day, as such banks, post office, and money flows will be closed. Capital Markets will be open with Fixed Income Markets having an early close and Equity Markets running in thinly traded novice hands.

Ahh…. but that is next week and today is a Friday, heading into a wonderful fall weekend. Enjoy your day, your weekend, and those special in your life !

A Night of reflection, the coming week kicks off the earnings treadmill, RMD’s, and a long weekend for some..

Last night I had the honor to receive the FPA Honor’s award from the Financial Planning Association of Dallas Fort Worth.  There is no way to express in words the collective passion, integrity, intelligence and dedication that attendees and fellow recipients shared at the meeting. It was a terrific night of reflection of the last 24 years in the industry and another reason I am thankful to be in this industry servicing clients and friends, such as those who may be reading this.

In addition to earnings season officially kicking off next week with the October 9th announcement of our steady friend Alcoa, Quarterly performance reports and our slightly cynical Newsletter will hit the mailboxes and electronic vaults as well.

We will begin processing Required Minimum Distributions (RMD’s) for those that have such requirements next week as well, staying well ahead of the end of the year requirement.

The post office, bankers, and my kids have Monday off in celebration of Columbus day. As such we would expect a slower than normal day today in the afternoon as well as Monday.

Have a great Friday and a super weekend!

Columbus Day Today, Fixed Income Closed, and a Slow Start to a Fast Earnings Week

Columbus Day is observed today, leaving the Fixed Income and banks closed, but tomorrow brings a full slate of earnings.

Today, Fixed Income Markets (Bonds and Banks too) are closed in observance of Columbus Day. A quick review of earnings reports due, shows only a few today, but looking  later into the week, we will get a great read on the economy as many companies from various sectors of our country will report their earnings.

As a quick review of earnings season, here are a few high points from our standpoint:

  • Larger Companies have bigger impact due to their diverse income portfolios
  • Guidance trumps current earnings (A great report for this quarter will not matter if companies guide lower in the future)
  • Early reporters will set the tone for the season (This week reports will set the momentum for the season)
  • Bad reports from close competitors will up the scrutiny of all fellow companies in the same industry

Have a Good day !

Donald and I will be out most of the day today at an industry event.
