Do Not Fall for the Call Microsoft Computer Fraud

They are back, so BE CAREFUL… Within one week we have noted TWO fake Microsoft computer hacks…

Here is how it goes:

Upon turning your computer on you are told to call Microsoft to help “Fix” your ailing computer….

DO NOT BITE–

This from Microsoft Support

Avoid and report Microsoft technical support scams

Microsoft will never proactively reach out to you to provide unsolicited PC or technical support. If you receive a phone call claiming to be from Microsoft, or see a pop-up window on your PC with a fake warning message and a phone number to call and get your “issue” fixed, it’s better to be safe and not click any links or provide any personal information.

Never call the number provided in the error message. Real Microsoft error messages never include a phone number to call.

Brilliant Fake Cell Call

Ok, so we warned/lectured enough up top… this one ALMOST got yours truly….

Looked very similar to a tennis player parent in my contacts….

Say goodbye to the unknown numbers… looks like they figured out how to impose a fake name-

Ahh…today is a Friday and just a week ago with the frozen tundra…. looks to be almost 80 degrees here…

Enjoy!! Talk next week!

Cell Phone Replacement … How Many Passwords Can a Cell Phone Have? … Friday

With travels hopefully opening up … a rather old Cell AND the opportunity to get jet speed coverage (5G+ which I have yet to see connected…grrrr) … longer battery life, the switch was on!

Not sure if the prior switch was smoother or maybe it is our obsession with security i.e. Two Factor Authentication, Authenticators, Face Recognition…

Sure know why they give you 30 days to turn your old cell in!

EEEEEKKKKKKKKKKKKK

The amount of Passwords from emails, to websites to log ins is staggering… have them all, but just when the thought of the coast is clear…. “Please Enter Your XXXX!”

Ya, ya, all real world problems, but sure will not upgrade the cell anytime soon again – Wow!

Next week we say good bye to January … a Month End Video is in the cards with some hopeful Inflation analysis, unless of course some thing more important jumps to the front of the line…

Ahhhh…. but that is next week, today is a Friday heading into a weekend… hopefully a chance to wish my 94 year old Father Happy Belated Birthday in person without the family being non symptomatic !

Have a Great Friday and weekend!

No Tax Law Changes for 2021, Same as 2020 … Last Minute Shoppers Watch Out, New Cyber Email

Of coarse …. the keyboard is calling even while out of the office with the 14 year old….

Felt this very important, and the WiFi is pretty good at this location!

Will keep it short, just two important items to tell you!

Washington Goes Home – No Tax Law Changes for 2021 – All Bets Off for 2022

Late last week it was agreed that the House and Senate would adjourn for the year, pushing any tax law changes that you may have heard (there were A LOT… remember often noise) as a 2022 issue!

With some new research ears on the ground in Washington, we hear there may be relief for the SALT tax cap … but never a guarantee on rumors…

On a personal self serving note, WHEW …. the Newsletter can finally not be smacked at the last minute and need to be completely redone … let our New York based printing presses begin … it is done! Yay

Last Minute Cyber Shoppers LOOK OUT – Clever Spam Email

In the span of two days the family received very clever spam emails from the following, each with an enticing link to click…. DO NOT BITE:

  • Home Depot Confirmation – But we did not make an on-line purchase and thankfully did not click on the hot link to the fake “Receipt”
  • Ace Hardware – This one was easier as we have not made any purchases at this establishment, BUT the format of the email was the same as the above HD
  • Best Buy – We have made Holiday purchases at BB (14 year old) but thankfully the email contained only “Best” and no Buy in the header, but the spam email address looked to come from BB

Have a Great “No Tax Changes and Don’t Click Bite” Day!

BREAK IN – Financial Processing Bottlenecks Continue to be Delayed, DO NOT PROCRASTINATE … Party Tomorrow … Crooks are Still Out, Credit Card Fraud X 2 … Friday Before Thanksgiving Week … Office Hours Next Week, Technology Tethered Mostly

BREAK IN – Financial Processing Bottlenecks Continue

We mentioned earlier, but want to reiterate that we are seeing slowing of processing especially manual (think human touch processes) as we near the end of the year.

DO NOT PROCRASTINATE any unique financial transaction as there is likely a slow player somewhere in the Financial Food chain! Curve balls happen, but really try to anticipate any unusual Financial movements you may have from here to years end… it will make for a much less stressful ride to the finish line!

Party, it’s a Party Party – Tomorrow DAC 3-5 pm

We look forward to seeing all of you at the party tomorrow at DAC from 3-5 PM…

We lucked out on the weather and as such will have an indoor and outdoor area to meet and greet… Moving closer to Norm once again! YAY

Crooks are NOT on Holiday

As mentioned here, the travel schedule has happily fired back up, for the record in a very quick time…

With a two day turnaround trip to another state about two weeks ago, the large Fraudulent charge was not a surprise and caught immediately….

The second immediate charge of slightly different amount but to the same company slipped through the cracks as a slow processing of the original charge…. Well done there Mr. Crook…. but no harm done…

Needless to say, the Crooks are out in full force…. Oh… and for the record a new Travel Only Card is in the works for just this type of defense …

Friday Before Thanksgiving Week – Office Hours

Ahhhh…. Today is a Friday heading into a Thanksgiving Day Week…

With the kids off the ENTIRE week for the first time ever, we will be loosely covering the office in alternating shifts, thanks to tethered technology… (None of us are 100% on where we will actually be, thanks again Mr. Technology!)

Expect MAYBE one last posting of the most popular video EVER, Blooper’s Happy Thanksgiving!

Have a GREAT Friday, enjoy your day, weekend, and restful Holiday Week Next Week!

Finland the Mysterious Email Eating Culprit … Yes FINLAND! Search Reveals Exact Details … Hamina, Finland

Finland? … No Way – Yep!

In a somewhat fascinating and you just can’t make this up experience, Google‘s move of a server farm to Finland has shed light on our mysterious email issues!

Break In – for those interested … a last minute search on Google for the server farm revealed the actual site is Hamina, Finland

Actual Google Picture of the site….Very pretty, but watch out, will eat your secured emails if you have a tight Cyber system….

Google Moves Server Farm for Gmail to Finland

Those followers and some who were unfortunately a participate in our email losses, which we blamed on an overzealous spam filter, turned out not to be the case at all.

Sometime recently Google moved a large group of their servers or opened a server Farm in Finland! Yes Finland, who would’ve thought!

Being in the industry we are, as many followers know, we take our collective cyber security very serious. As such we have most countries blocked even before the spam filter, meaning emails from certain countries will not even come to our spam folder and will be blocked completely!

With Google‘s new server farm moving to Finland, unbeknownst to us, Finland was of course turned off as a country to receive emails (as a side note it’s currently turned back on), but with the rerouting @Gmail‘s from Google … the discovery of Lost emails were made.

While we blamed our overzealous spam filter (sorry about that spam catcher), the Google shift actually created the problem, which was a very simple fix upon discovery.

Lesson learned, if you do not hear from us in a short time PLEASE let us know as we always get back to everyone quickly and a lengthy absence would mean something like this has occurred.

Who would’ve thought Finland would end up being the problem to eat our emails!

Lesson learned, have a great Friday and much more respect for Finland!

Reviews of FULL Two Days of Virtual Gathering…. Cyber, Inflation Transitory NOT, Interesting Fatigue from Event…

Last week the team happily carefully gathered and divided to maximize our time at a two day Virtual Conference that is usually “In Person” lasts about a week, and is located in alternating years on the West Coast and then the East…

The conference lasted two days (Tuesday and Wednesday 10 am-3 pm) and was a straight (small morning break of 20 minutes, but no lunch break or bathroom break) five hours each day, with overlapping events except for several “Main” general sessions such as a talk with Ben Bernanke….

The method of attack was for each of us to choose what looked the most interesting and if there was an accidental overlap of desired events, one change to a different session. Oddly, and maybe this speaks to each of desires and roles, we rarely overlapped… there were a few sessions that were “Full” , for the record not sure how a virtual session can get full, but oh well…

As of this time, the sessions are not up for post live review so our review here is part for our own notes (living diary) and mostly for your shared knowledge …

Cyber Threats and Interesting Home Threat Note

Regular followers know we take Cyber security VERY seriously, and just by chance yours truly ended up in lengthy Cyber Security sessions on both days.

Key Takeaways from an office standpoint were more two factor authorizations (extra step of logging into important programs that includes a text to cell)

For the record over the weekend after telling the team last week “I always have my cell” a chance package delivered to the office led a trip up to the office with the cell in the car and the need to log into an important program….. Guess I DON’T always have my cell…haha

A new interesting reminder for those that work from home at all was a statement “If your home router is older than three years and especially if not a commercial router, you may be unsecure!” This of course led to a quick review of each of our home set ups with the note of having a now 14 year old gamer, and a complete security review of all at home security was completed…. just for extra security additional security was set up along with a special at home “Guest Wifi” rather than the family’s for friends who may carry unwanted programs into the network…

Inflation Less Transitory than Thought

Jerome Powell, chair of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) during a speaking event last week mentioned that the coming inflation may be less transitory than initially expected…

Recall this was the main debate at the Mauldin SIC conference early in the Second Quarter as mentioned here and in our Q 3 2021 Newsletter..

Several guests, most notably Lizanne Saunders echoed this thought during a fast speaking opening session…

The basic thought originally was the CPI line below would roll over quickly, now more are thinking it may last longer, especially with the afore mentioned FOMC on record to allow without intervention…

Interesting Observable Fatigue from Event

This was one our first events of this length and without much of a break, we all noted an interesting (high) level of fatigue. It seems like there would be no reason for any tiredness given sitting in front a computer for 10 hours in two days, but is sure was.. heck we were not participants, only observers…

Will keep a tab on this moving forward, sure others have experienced the same, but our first notable occurrence.

Have a Great “Virtual Conference” Update!

Sudden Increases in Cell Spam … Don’t Click on That Text … Don’t Answer that Call … Personal Mistake … Cyber Updates

About a year ago, a note was spotted that we would have a near 400% increase in the next 12 months of spam calls …. at the time seemed unreasonable….

Fast forward to today, think the estimate was low….. based on everyone’s experiences…

Cyber Update – Spam Calls and Now More Recent TEXTS

Last week we had a family get together where a reminder went out to all member NOT to answer calls that had a number very similar to any of our and more importantly to NOT click on the new relentless texts that seem to be picking up steam in volume….

Almost got me…. with our cell bill being on auto pay… a nice thank you text from our cell provider followed by a link for a special gift ALMOST got me….

AT&T Free Msg: August bill is paid. Thanks, [name]! Here’s a little freebie for you: [link].”

Late last week our local paper, The Dallas Morning News ran the following story (think you can read the story even without a subscription…some great screen shot examples)

Here is a great article by the Federal Trade Commission on examples and how to avoid as well…

On Saturday, the family was asked to save any of their fake Texts…. in two days, this is what we ended up with…

The Call Spam filter is busier than ever but certainly does not catch all the spam calls…

Personal Accidental Mistake

Early in the year while on a conference call with two other folks, an attempt to decline an unfamiliar call turned into an accidental answer… the spam call then began recalling about 20 times before I could get off the conference call and block the number….

If it’s important they will leave a message… everyone is getting these same calls, so all will understand…

Don’t recklessly click or answer (reminding myself too) ….

Have a Great “Don’t click the bait” Day!

In this post, we spoke to the safety of signing your name to the biggest email providers if possible for your own safety….

Of course not all names will be available, but if yours is, it is a great idea to take it, even if you never use the email platform… think scammers acting as you!

Jerome Powell Gets Angry, Taper Coming

In this market related post, we noted that Powell, head of the FOMC (Federal Open Market Committee) was very stern in taper talk as well as the following quote from us:

“On another totally different and non-market related and non-economic related topic several federal reserve members had transactions over the past year that were not optically good for the federal reserve. One of the members is our very own favorite Robert Kaplan who had multiple large transactions in securities that the federal reserve was involved.

While we will voice no opinion on this … Jerome Powell was very stern surprisingly, and in our mind so stern that it could be an occupational loss for some of these members. It will be interesting to see what comes out of this, but this is not the end of it and once again Powell was very angry and forceful on this point.”

Unfortunately, Kaplan our favorite announced his retirement as well as the other board member, before the end of the day after our post!

Why You May Want to Register Your Name on Multiple Email Providers Even if You Do Not Plan on Using that Service!

With the proliferation of spam, cyber attacks and just some bad actors out there, it may be a good idea to register your name as well as your family members name for your own safety…

We have registered all of our family names on the big five at the time of registration, gmail, hotmail, outlook, yahoo and icloud…. these are no longer the biggest…see below

Even if you do not plan on using the provider, it may make sense to register so some “bad Actor” does not pose as you…

Ok, we get it, with a weird last name like ours, it was not that hard, those with more normal names may have a tougher time, but you may still want to try…. bad guys are not going away!

The Largest Email Providers

The following is a snap shot of the last frame of this neat graphic from Statics and Data

Not sure if any of you noticed the last few videos are not coming through email notification well…but we did… and it is currently being fixed….

Hence the Snapshot, we know that will work…

Here is the actual embedded video… if you see a video, it has been fixed, if just a link, not fixed yet…

There you have it… another in our Why series AND a light, fun and hopefully helpful post labor day article!

Have a Great “Register Your Name on that Email” Day!

Financial Planning Tip (s) –

With Tax season finally over, here we mentioned how it seemed to never end…but we digress…

It appears the Cyber Thieves are back at it again, and have a new technique involving Social Security. Here in our Social Cyber Post, we discuss just how they are doing this.Cyber Attack

Bottom line, if you see something suspicious, be sure to notify the appropriate agency.

Early Discussions of the Interest Rate Yield Curve – Rates

This is going to be fun …. In the first of a multi-part series here, we discuss the basics of the yield curve.

Bottom line, at its most basic level the yield curve should go upward and outward just as our home made chart below (the starting point for our discussion.)
