Cyber Thief Update – We have some good news – Clever new tactic to watch out

The last several years marked double digit cyber invasive events through us and our friends and clients at the start of the year, peaking at tax time. Topping out at a new high last year with 12 invasive events.

This year we’re happy to announce that total threats were low single digits.

However, we did hear of a unique new trick from the tricksters worth noting.

The Social Security TrickCyber Attack

This year through our peer study groups we heard of one of the most clever Cyber tactics in recent memory. This Cyber attack involves signing up for your Social Security, but not being you, and depositing your Social Security into someone else’s account.

Bottom line if you receive ANYTHING from the Social Security thanking you for commencing your services for whatever reason, check into it may be fraudulent …. likely is if you have not had any interaction with the Social Security Administration!

Wish the thieves spent as much time working productive as they do destructively … the world would be a better place…… but we digress!

Have a Great Less Social Security Cyber Attacks Day!

Equifax breach and what to do about it?

On Thursday of last week Equifax announced it had a breach of possibly 143 million people who may have a credit report on file.

Before you jump off a cliff, understand this ranks only as the Fourth largest breach in history…. big, but not even close to the largest from yahoo, about 1.5 billion from 2013-2014.

This is again a modern day Bonnie and Clyde!

Breach Occurred in JulyEquifax

Here is the website Equifax is giving for information that also contains a link to a page that will allegedly check to see if your information has been compromised.

Before you jump in and check your information on the Equifax site, read the following:

The website they have given to check to see if your information was compromised says yes to any inquiry according to a  New York Times reporter… hmmmm

What to do? – Calmly take actions

Assume your information has been compromised !- It will most likely be eventually anyway, if it was not already …. so again no jumping off a cliff, it’s better than be held up at gunpoint “Modern day Bonnie and Clyde”

Monitor your credit from now on- Credit.com, credit karma and many others that guard your credit are a good place to go. Many credit card companies and mortgage companies send your soft, high level score monthly, keep an eye on your report for fluctuations.

Check your credit annually,  here in our article on how to safely do this in what is called a soft check so as not to hurt your credit.

Have all of your credit cards send you an email after every transaction- its easy and a good safety net.

You can opt for the free Equifax year, if you do you must do this by November 21st. We would not recommend the monitoring after the free year unless you have an incident. There will likely be a large number of people who forget about the free year and actually become a paying client to Equifax after their breach… real irony !

Expect more breaches in the future, but if you have done the preventatives above, you will be fine.

This too shall pass and likely not nearly the incidents many are calling for!

End of our all our credit?  …. nah … pesky modern day Bonnie and Clyde, and a need to heighten our radars from now on? … YEP !

Have a Great “Less Worrying Credit” Day!

Watch Cyberattacks as they occur …. Save the Date VERY special announcement

We ran across this  cool living graphic this week from Visual Capitalist and Norse..

This is a still picture of Cyberattacks occurring live.

While neat, this picture does not do it justice.

Click here for the actual living breathing attacks tracking as they occur. After a few minutes you will be dazzled. Especially at the scrolling monitor.

Have no idea how they track this, but figured someone would have a graphic like this. Now we know.

Save the Date

We confirmed our Holiday party venue this week and it is going to be spectacular. Please save the Saturday before Thanksgiving, (November 18, 2017) from 1-5 pm on your calendar and ready your friends and family for a fun event!

An event for kids, family and anyone who likes the change of season ….hint hint … More to come next week, but we were too excited to keep it under wraps any longer.

Have a Great Day!

Cybercrime – Hacking update – SHARK Week

We warned in mid May of an increase in cyber hacking as school gets out. Unfortunately we have not been wrong on this one… actually we understated the problem.

Cyber Hacks Up

We have seen MANY MORE email hacks than normal, especially this early in the summer. Keep your guards up and do not open suspicious emails… here are some helpful reminders:

  • Complex passwords for your log in (your name is NOT a good password as my 11 year old daughter learned on her snapchat account!)
  • Mind the wifi source – tether when uncertain
  • Careful when traveling – A purchase of an RFID resistant wallet kept my most recent trip uneventful, even though THE EXACT trip the last two consecutive times resulted in credit card fraud

Shark Week Returns

A family favorite that two years ago was moved from middle of August to late June, early July … Shark Week — It’s going on now!

Since fourth of July is a popular water related venture…we think the move was to remind those getting in …. OR just a timely screening !

Have a great Monday!

Cybercriminals 4 …. John 0… Funny Story

After warning of several cybercrime attempts here, here and here. And even more recently the story of 100k tax returns lost by the IRS , the latest chapter of the cybercrime puzzle arrived in my mailbox over the weekend.

Turbo Tax Asks for their MoneyCybercrime

A nice form letter arrived in my mailbox over the latest weekend stating I owed Turbo Tax money for their software as the “refund” was not enough to cover the cost. Nope, had not used their software!

Gotta hand it to the cybercriminals, if your going to do it, go all in!

Before I even explained to the representative at Turbo Tax why I was calling, the nice lady on the other end of the line said “This was a fraud right?”  “Ya,  How did you know?” According to her this was a very common problem lately.

Keep your guards up!

Actually a funny story if you think about it .. Fraudulent filing, using fraud to get the software to do the fraud … Wow .. certainly creative!

Have a Good Day!

Fraud Continues, Do not let your guards down

Unfortunately we continue to see cybercriminal activities.  Our peer professionals are also seeing the same.

Do not let your guards downCybercrime

  • Keep your information as private as possible
  • If you have had an intrusion such as a fake call, income tax filing fraud (present party included), or other intrusion, be on high alert
  • Consider a credit monitoring service (see next 3-25-15 report)

The Simple Dollar’s Top Picks

In case Identity Guard is not what you’re looking for, several other strong companies worth considering emerged from my research.

  1. Identity Guard
  2. LifeLock
  3. Identity Force
  4. Experian
  5. TransUnion

Be safe out there!

My Identity stolen a third time ??? Yep … Friday

As a financial advisor we drink the EXACT same cool aid we have for clients   … Same investments, same conservative philosophy, long-term thinking, tax strategies, generally optimistic, but skeptical when necessary  … and well … I guess the same identity theft some have experienced lately!

On Tuesday of this week, I was notified by the IRS by mail, not just once, but two lovely envelopes, stating someone was trying to file taxes (not me) and there was a conflict. (Nothing associated with the office, all info from my home/personal address)

Wow… TWO TIMES … Does that mean two different people are trying, or just the same person twice ? I will let you know when I know! thief

Needless to say, keep your guards up!  Here , here and here are a few of our articles on this, which of course I have heeded myself!

Ahhhh, but today is a Friday and I am on the road for a short but fun trip out-of-town and back. Do not forget to spend time with those special in your life … Talk to you next week!

Get back cyber criminals!

Important IRS Fraud Letter … The “5071C” Letter … Take this letter Seriously

As you most likely know, fraud has been on the rise, especially cyber fraud. With information traveling through cyberspace and some of it falling into the wrong hands, the new Bonnie and Clyde is cyber fraud.

The IRS 5071C Letter- Do Not Ignore It

The IRS is sending out a letter titled 5071C. This letter is to identify you and very possibly means you are part of an IRS fraud attempt. Needless to say do not ignore this letter. thief

Here is the link to the IRS website concerning this letter.

Here are a couple of tips:

  1. Act Quickly, while this may be no big deal, something has triggered this correspondence.
  2. Call the number on your letter first, our contacts are hearing that is a faster process, expect an extended wait.
  3. Try the internet link provided in the letter if you cannot get through, but make certain the link ends in .gov … you guessed it, there are fraudulent fraud letters floating out there in an attempt to gather your information.
  4. Most likely hold off on filing your taxes until you get this cleared as an electronic rejection is very probable, confirm this once contact is made with the IRS.
  5. Always be careful to validate your sources before sending or releasing any of your personal information.

Sorry for these types of updates, but unfortunately this is the world we live in … it is better than “Hands Up!”

Have a Great Day!

A Word About Recent Public Data Breaches … Summer Friday

Recently a Milwaukee security firm publicly released a stunning estimate of possible data breaches.  The news was picked up in this New York Times article and the blaze was on.

Estimated Over a Billion Passwords Hacked

The stunning number seems to be what has caught many, including myself by surprise. No matter the accuracy of this research a few continued steps will help prevent your information falling into the wrong hands. (Recall we have spoken of this before here , here, and here.)

  1. Change Passwords Frequently
  2. Do not keep the same password on all accounts
  3. Keep a strong password i.e. include a symbol
  4. Email confidential information carefully
  5. Skip words like “password” or “username” in your email

BREAK IN: After multiple calls to IT providers and protectors, most financial institutions are monitoring 24/7 for possible breaches or attempted breaches. A common theme rose to the surface, DO NOT HAVE THE SAME PASSWORD ON MULTIPLE ACCOUNTS … Sorry to deliver that information, if you are like me, this further complicates an already memory stressed log in  … Oh well, better safe than sorry …

MIX UP THOSE PASSWORDS.

There is no way to be 100% protected. If the FBI or NASA can be broken into, it is not possible to guarantee safety. However following the above steps will help reduce your possible exposure, especially for your banking information or any money controlling related account.

On a positive note, the firm releasing the estimated breach along with several other tech contacts we have touched base with noted the most likely use of this information was for spam and more spam.

Here is a neat chart of  todays interconnectivity
