Not to worry it’s not Friday already … with tomorrow being a holiday, Easter, Good Friday, we wanted to remind and share some important ideas today, Thursday rather than our usual Friday Morning chat!

Final Days of Taxes

As mentioned here, in our earlier post “Be Careful What You Ask For” tax season came upon everyone I know in the industry much harder this year than in the prior two due to the delays, but happily we’re just about on the other side of the mountain! Yay

Extension Option

On a related tax filing note, if you have not completed your taxes or do not intend to do so on time, be sure to file an extension. Extensions are easy and give you ample time to complete your returns, but require you to estimate if you owe taxes and you’ll need to pay in that amount or you may face penalties.

Here is a link to the IRS website and how to apply for the automatic extension!

Electronic Payment of ES Taxes

Here is the IRS tax website link, which is very easy to make electronic estimated taxes. Be sure to follow the instructions carefully as there are a lot of different options for making payments to taxes, and be sure to carefully enter your personal information so the IRS knows it’s you.

Friday Office Closed, Early Exits Today, Tethered for Tax Questions

Tomorrow as mentioned earlier is a national holiday, as such banks, stock exchanges, government offices, and our office will be closed. On that note with some of the family members getting out early we will be out of the office early today as well.

In closing, while we will be out of the office I will personally watch my electronics tomorrow and the weekend for anyone who has last minute forms or tax questions that they may need help!

Monday April 18th is the official last day to file our personal tax returns, notably Form 1040. If at all possible we hope you’ve completed all of your tax information prior to Monday April 18th if at all possible!

Earnings Update … Travels … Good Friday …

Yesterday was the final deadline for normal tax filings. We are very interested to see what the total tax revenues were for this season. Since this is reported by the US government, we look forward to the data release, and of course will review it with everyone here.

Earnings Update

So far earnings have not been ok. Top line growth is still absent, but managers continue to squeeze every drop of earnings out through productivity gains and technology improvements.  Markets are dicey as we are at high valuations. Continued company growth with a sideways market is helpful.

Travels and roundtable questions

I will be out of the office the rest of the week, tethered of course via technology. With the tax season behind us, look out for our roundtable event coming soon.  Get your questions thinking cap on as we will be requesting formally next week with a call for your Social and Medicare questions.  Anything is fair game !

Not Only a Friday, but a “Good Friday”Time Goes Fast

Friday April 18, 2014 is Good Friday and Capital Markets as well as our office will be closed.  Don’t forget to spend time with those special in your life …. It goes fast!

While the Cyprus bank scalping has not completely played out, we are very surprised at the strength capital markets have shown in the face of such an Cypressevent. The continued concern is contagion of a bank run as most certainly Cyprus banks will have issues keeping their deposits once the banks open. We cannot image a situation where given the stated haircut, ANY logical person would keep their deposits in the Cyprus banking system…..the Question, Where might they put those deposits?? (A bit worried on this)

Next Week Good Friday honored, Taxes…Tick Tock

Next week is a  short week with Friday being honored as Good Friday.  As such banks, capital markets, government entities and our office will be closed.  While such an early Good Friday (last year it was almost four weeks later) seems odd, the honored and restful day may give many good family time and a chance to catch up on their taxes. Tick, Tock….get moving if you have not…..Uncle Sam wants a us!

Quick Trip and Rock and Roll

This weekend brings a quick turn around trip out-of-state with Sunday back home for a Tennis tournament for Sophia (8-year-old) and the annual Rock and Roll Dallas 1/2 Marathon for myself (a bit unprepared, but always fun … wishing for cool weather)

Take a deep breath, the first quarter of 2012 is in the books in what seems like a flash!

Domestic Indexes performances were dominated by one stock, Apple! In what a contrarian investor we like and follow regularly, Doug Kass calls “NBA” markets, “Nothing But Apple” Quarter.  It has been some time since we have seen such a large company dominate the indexes; flashback to 99? In what have you done for me lately fashion, time will tell what the future brings.

As you read this, I am out-of-state today for a quick turn around trip.  Tomorrow brings a rest for domestic capital markets as Good Friday is honored and we will be out of the office as well. As a former collegiate golfer (helped pay my way through college) having Good Friday and The Masters synched is terrific.

Speaking of sporting events, our Q2 2012 Newsletter is on the press and turned out very well, with a light-hearted first pitch baseball theme. We compare and contrast the famous sport to investing, building a portfolio, and the psychology needed to be a good long-term investor. We think you will like it and even updated our market thoughts with greater detail than normal.
