What to do when your email is hacked ?

Although slightly less invasive than having your identity stolen, losing control of your email can be dangerous and should not be taken lightly.

Break In– Recently we helped a relative discover a nasty email hack on an IPhone… It was called “Prayer of the Day!” and downloaded a bogus and controlling email on the IPhone .. as far as we could tell, no damage was done, however the hack was the best and most controlling we had seen… Bottom Line… BE CAREFUL when you click on unknown links…even if they may seem harmless!

First, just as in the identity loss, breathe … this likely will not be the last time such an event occurs, and if you are lucky, it is the first….

Here are the steps:

  1. Change your password- fast- make it complex, preferably with symbols as there are only 26 English letters, nothing to a savvy hacker!
  2. Other Password used sites- If this was your favorite password…the secret is out, time to change it on all of your other sites you use it !
  3. Recapture your email – Contact your provider or follow the steps to regaining control of your email if you have lost it (Many times you may still have control, if so you may ignore this step)
  4. Sent box review – Look in your sent box to see if any sent emails are found – See next step
  5. Notify your contacts- It is a good idea to let those that may have received a bogus email from you that you have been hacked – Not to worry, they will understand… heck they may be on the other end of the hacking eventually anyway!
  6. Run your Virus Scan – There may still be something in your system, it is a good idea to run a complete scan of your computer after you have updated the above information — it is possible you will find nothing…safe over sorry !

Preventive Steps

  1. Watch Out – Be careful when clicking on ANYTHING unfamiliar
  2. Help thy neighbor- If you see something fishy from a friend or contact, let them know immediately…this may stop the spreading of unwanted hacks…

Modern Day Bonnie and Clyde

In the old days it was a weapon … this seems to be the new way of destruction … annoying, painful, unnerving …. but not as dangerous…!

Have a Great Day!

Cybercrime – Hacking update – SHARK Week

We warned in mid May of an increase in cyber hacking as school gets out. Unfortunately we have not been wrong on this one… actually we understated the problem.

Cyber Hacks Up

We have seen MANY MORE email hacks than normal, especially this early in the summer. Keep your guards up and do not open suspicious emails… here are some helpful reminders:

  • Complex passwords for your log in (your name is NOT a good password as my 11 year old daughter learned on her snapchat account!)
  • Mind the wifi source – tether when uncertain
  • Careful when traveling – A purchase of an RFID resistant wallet kept my most recent trip uneventful, even though THE EXACT trip the last two consecutive times resulted in credit card fraud

Shark Week Returns

A family favorite that two years ago was moved from middle of August to late June, early July … Shark Week — It’s going on now!

Since fourth of July is a popular water related venture…we think the move was to remind those getting in …. OR just a timely screening !

Have a great Monday!

Summer = Increase Hacking

We topped out at 10 tax cyber hacks this year (10 people had some type of fraudulent tax related issue) and just as we all get ready for summer, we wanted to remind of a recurring theme we have seen over the last several years.

Increased Hacks during the summer

It is certainly not any of our kids, or any kids we know…of course not..BUT..

We do notice an increase in mostly non malicious cyber related issues over the summer. How does that saying go “Idle minds…..”

Keep your guards up this summer!

  • Do not open any weird looking emails, especially if they have odd links.
  • If you receive an odd mass email from someone you know, let them know they may have been hacked, it may save us all a few headaches.
  • Make your passwords strong by including a symbol.
  • Check the root web address carefully before you enter your information – if in doubt open another browser and surf to the link to see if it looks legit.
  • Take your time! Most of my miss haps have occurred while being careless and in unfamiliar web pages, such as looking for a unique sports statistic in unfamiliar web pages.

The good news is, with a little forethought we can avoid what is mostly a minor summer annoyance!

Hacker(s) gets 100 thousand Tax Returns from IRS…. SCHOOL IS OUT !!!

In a “You cannot make this up moment“, the IRS reported on Tuesday the 26th, a clever hacker(s) managed to get over 100 thousand tax returns.

The hacks were via a request for transcript, much like a bank or mortgage company would do to confirm your filed return was the same as the one you may be showing them.

Most Important Item of the IRS hack

The IRS is going to send a letter to those they believe information was stolen. We will update you as more information is released, but for now be on the watch for a letter.

In this crazy cyberworld, also be on the watch for a fake/hack letter …. I know, you gotta be kidding me…nope !

School is out

Schools Out
Seems like only yesterday I posted this picture, but it indeed was ANOTHER full year ago !

Today my first grader has a new curvy number in front of his grade level and my fourth grade princess “graduates” from her school, and heads to middle school… formal ceremony, funny five-year video, tons of mom (and dad) tears not withstanding, I will be out most of the afternoon !

It goes fast… do not take it for granted !!

Talk to you next week … Yep that is a new month too!!! …. told ya it goes fast

Have a great weekend!
