Financial Planning Tip(s)

Cell Text Spam and Calls

With the handy, cell phone which is almost like carrying around a powerful computer, replacing our land lines, in this post we remind all to be very careful in which calls you answer and most importantly clicking on a hot link of a text you may have received on you cell… DO NOT BITE!

Here is an example of a very dangerous spam text – do not click on that hotlink as you will be directed to a bad place that may cause your cell harm…

Grant Williams Podcast with Sam Zell

A new found favorite way of continued learning and education, frequently while jogging or walking, in this post, a review of a fantastic hour long podcast with Sam Zell via the Grant Williams Podcast series…

Favorite Notes:

Staying Power is the name of the game… No surprises!

Real money by long term holdings, be patient.

Will you slow down?  People ask me that all the time…”Slow down from what…I like what I do,”

Bonds, Interest Rate Headwind Reminders

In 2018 as interest rates smartly began rising, we reminded folks, those especially with more conservative allocations (larger allocations to bonds) that the immediate effect of higher interest rates are a slight headwind to bond portfolios. For the record, they are big headwinds to very long dated bond portfolios i.e. 30 years, which is why we stay away from such portfolios…

Fast forward to the beginning of the year and very recently, we felt the need to remind again here. The fantastic news is that with shorter dated portfolios as mentioned above, this headwind turns into money in our pockets in the form of higher income as rates again smartly rise on the expectation of greater economic growth prospects.

Sudden Increases in Cell Spam … Don’t Click on That Text … Don’t Answer that Call … Personal Mistake … Cyber Updates

About a year ago, a note was spotted that we would have a near 400% increase in the next 12 months of spam calls …. at the time seemed unreasonable….

Fast forward to today, think the estimate was low….. based on everyone’s experiences…

Cyber Update – Spam Calls and Now More Recent TEXTS

Last week we had a family get together where a reminder went out to all member NOT to answer calls that had a number very similar to any of our and more importantly to NOT click on the new relentless texts that seem to be picking up steam in volume….

Almost got me…. with our cell bill being on auto pay… a nice thank you text from our cell provider followed by a link for a special gift ALMOST got me….

AT&T Free Msg: August bill is paid. Thanks, [name]! Here’s a little freebie for you: [link].”

Late last week our local paper, The Dallas Morning News ran the following story (think you can read the story even without a subscription…some great screen shot examples)

Here is a great article by the Federal Trade Commission on examples and how to avoid as well…

On Saturday, the family was asked to save any of their fake Texts…. in two days, this is what we ended up with…

The Call Spam filter is busier than ever but certainly does not catch all the spam calls…

Personal Accidental Mistake

Early in the year while on a conference call with two other folks, an attempt to decline an unfamiliar call turned into an accidental answer… the spam call then began recalling about 20 times before I could get off the conference call and block the number….

If it’s important they will leave a message… everyone is getting these same calls, so all will understand…

Don’t recklessly click or answer (reminding myself too) ….

Have a Great “Don’t click the bait” Day!

Text at your own risk in Texas … Now Illegal as of Sept 1 – Safe wishes for those in front of Irma

The data is clear, texting is a distraction … heck even talking on the phone while driving can be dangerous.

Texting and Driving Made Illegalad0f7795-a9f1-44e7-9d5b-2faa36a0a4e3-1720-00000190cac62bcd

As of September 1, 2017, this bill made texting and driving illegal in the state of Texas.

While hard to enforce, it is a step in the correct direction. The penalties are not strict at this time, but a ticket is a ticket.

Washington was the first state to ban texting in driving in the year, 2007 YEP, 10 years earlier.

Currently there are 47 states that have made it illegal to text and drive. No idea.. Wow!

This is one of the reasons I love doing this blog for everyone, I had no idea that 46 states had already banned texting!

Best wishes to all of those who are in front of this sudden second major hurricane! After speaking at length yesterday to many in Florida … it’s going to be very tough no matter the outcome, be safe and best wishes. Our friends in Puerto Rico avoided the worst, we hope our Floridian family and friends do as well…

Have a good safe weekend for all and we will talk to you Monday!
