Rental Car Accident Update … Not so lucky … How the rental car was fixed without a personal insurance claim and no money out of pocket!

J.K. Financial, Inc.

As a follow up to the Rental Car Crash post last reviewed here – Now we get to the rest of the story, not completely surprising … a little lucky to be able to check all the boxes ….

So here we go …note the demands from the Credit Card Insurance Carrier, which was an outsourced company and easy to work with!

The return of the Rental Car went without a hitch… but that is where, not surprisingly the good luck ended….

Close-up image of a damaged gray rental car showing scrapes and a dent on the rear fender.

From the post “… saw my “Car crasher Friend” absolutely no recognition of myself….

Needless to say it was not surprising, that Janet did not recall the incident, had forgotten to pay her insurance and was virtually unable to communicate on the subject…

Rental Car Demand Letter Received

After growing frustrated with the situation, the Rental Car company turned to me for the repairs…again not surprisingly… Having been through a similar but not as serious (damage amount) before, a double check of the current credit card used to rent the car confirmed Rental Car Travel insurance- whew…

Mandates for the Credit Card Coverage – Careful yours may be different – These were mine!

  • Accident Report – Rental Car completed this upon return of the car
  • Proof non other insurance coverage – not wanting to pay twice
  • Demand Letter from the Rental Car Company – This is likely your easiest item – They want their funds!
  • Initial and Final Rental Car Agreement – This received electronically after return
  • Billing on the Credit Card i.e. Statement to show the charges were on the correct covered Credit Card
  • Police Report – While this was required an affidavit saying this was on private property, no injuries (other than the car) was sufficient
  • Personal Insurance Declaration pages – Hoping they did not call the carrier for this, as it was delivered to the Credit Card Insurance carrier
  • Repair Estimates – This was in the Rental Car company demand letter –
  • Two pictures of the Rental Car – Had several but was focused more on the damaging car, so thankfully enough pictures – this was a close one

Couple of Questions you may ask –

Is this Rental Credit Card coverage unique? Do not think so, but you should check your respective cards coverages and the rules at the same time, as they may be different from these!

Why were you so adamant in keeping your personal Auto Insurance out of the picture ? High deductible which would cover none of these repairs, and any request made to them will result in an CLUE claim (cool article that was picked up by USA Today) causing increased premiums!

Why not use the Rental Car insurance? Lengthy usage of rental cars and very good prices make the premiums a gigantic increase in cost.

So there you have it, the secret to keeping the costs off your personal insurance record and keeping everyone happy at the same time!

Have a Great “Rental Car Credit Crash Coverage” Day!
