Beta- Walking An English Bulldog and a French Puppy Bulldog example…

Beta

One of the most important yet likely easiest Greeks to understand

While there are a myriad of Greeks used by Wall Street, one of the most common and likely important (fortunately relatively simple to understand) is Beta.

Beta as it is used in investment management is a measure of correlation. The key to understanding this Greek is what you are measuring against. The most common measurement, especially for those that live in the United States, is the large index known as the S&P 500, but can be anything you would like to measure against.

So, how about a real world example!

Elder English Bulldog versus a small Puppy French Bulldog

Taking two dogs for a walk example

With a French bulldog under roof, this example came to mind – you can insert your choice for more realism.

You are walking down the sidewalk and you have an elder English Bulldog on one leash and a puppy French Bulldog on the other leash.

You slow down and the elder English begrudgingly slows, while the puppy immediately slows.

Now you start again, but at a relatively fast pace. The puppy jumps and tugs ahead while the elder English once again, begrudgingly starts walking slowly.

In this example, you are the Beta and a Beta of 1. The puppy is a Beta of much greater than 1, lets say 1.5 or 150% of your change and the elder English is a Beta of .5%, half or 50% of the changed speed!

Change walkers/Indexes/Comparisons and the Beta will change.

An educational cartoon illustration explaining Beta in investing using a dog walking analogy. In the center, a person representing the Market Index (Beta 1.0) walks forward on a city sidewalk holding two leashes. On the left, a slow, stubborn elder English Bulldog represents low-beta, slower-moving investments (Beta 0.5). On the right, an energetic French Bulldog puppy bounds ahead, representing high-beta, faster-moving investments (Beta 1.5). Above them are dashed trend lines illustrating speed and magnitude relative to the walker's pace.

Why it matters?

Without any dogs, your Beta is 1.

Walking with just an elder English, your collective Beta is less than one.

Walk with just the puppy Frenchie and your collective Beta is greater than 1.

Walking with both, a calculation has to be done, but is possible.

Adjustments to speed faster or less quickly, is important as your path becomes more or less challenging aka Standard Deviation/Variance/Rsik – and next up for explanation.

Have a Great “Walking the Beta Dogs Example” Day!
