This, our lead financial planning article for the newsletter- With the subject of inheritance and the taxability of it occurring multiple times in the most recent quarter, the idea for this article spawned.
After completing the initial article, a continuation article idea also occurred which made the second part of the inheritance subject matter about being separate property.
We hope you enjoyed both articles and this was our lead financial planning articles.
All about the Car
In another fun personal financial planning two – part article, long desired, but fearful of writing …this article discusses the car, should you buy or lease and how to do so. Again, a second article occurred at a chance meeting in an airplane with a former law officer watching me finish the first article on the airplane!
In doing the research for these articles we ran across a really cool car research site, and mentioned some great buying resources as well.
Recession Thwarted – Capital Market Thoughts
To ignore new evidence in our minds is silly even if it goes against the grain of what you may have been saying!
In this article we review a CFA speaker’s slide about lowering rates during a recession and his conclusion. Bottom line, we’ve not been a big fan of lowering rates during economic growth, but an inverted yield curve which is highly predictive of a coming recession, along with lowering of rates, according to the speaker and the enclosed chart leads to a thwarting of the recession.
We hope we are wrong on this one and the speaker is correct!

Reach back to last year’s taxes in savings you can do now
In this article we discuss the remaining tax savings ideas that we can do this year, that will help last year’s taxes-
The SEP – Simplified Employee Pension
HSA – for the Health Savings Account
IRA – An oldie but a Goodie if it’s available to you
Roth – While not a tax saver you can do it now for last year’s taxes
Itemized itemize itemize – With today’s high standard deductions you may not be able to itemize but we remind that it’s a good idea to stay in shape as it’s likely these itemize deductions may come back in the future
As I type this, I am waiting for the producer of the show, Michelle Stucker to call and place my phone on the live – yes LIVE – call in Financial Planning Radio show!
Your Money- Wharton University – Professor Kent Smetters
Channel 132 – from 4-5 pm daily this week, Dallas time will re-air the show for those interested…
Yesterday I was honored to once again co-host Kent Smetters, Wharton Professor and Sirius Satellite Radio show for almost an hour !
Talk about getting out of your normal comfort zone – a live nationwide radio show will do it for you!
After almost 30 years of experience in the industry, the heart still pounds before the show….
Will I do my intro ok?
What questions will come in?
Who will call?
What if I get a twister question?
What if my phone goes out or the electricity drops? Not kidding…You do think of these things…
The last 20 minutes before the show… feels like an ETERNITY… (I am creating this portion of the post just before the show …. Under Pressure ….for reality!)
Michelle Stucker the producer calling… I am added to the show …. Pink Floyd music stops… it’s show time !!!
Live Guest Host Appearance Last Night
We were asked to co-host the final leg of the two hour show last night and it was a blast… rapid fire, off the cuff questions came in from across the country…
Mindy from New York called and asked for her 78 year old just about to retire mother… impressive work age — pay off a Heloc, set aside funds and stay conservative
Gary a likely career Military person calls with extra money to invest, after dissecting his situation, Max the TSP Military retirement plan
John from Alabama with a question on an IRA windfall – keep the funds in the beneficiary IRA for sure, various ways to invest the funds, but keeping the funds as an IRA most impoortant
Boom…and just like that, it was over… Michelle popped in my ear and said we want to have you back more frequently and thanks very much for the help !! I happily agreed!!!
What a great way to give back/feel good! Honor the opportunity!
If you are so inclined the replay will run throughout this week on Sirius Satellite Radio Channel 111, until next weeks show. Due to copyright, we cannot reproduce the show.
Greece, Puerto Rico and China synchronized negative events to end most capital markets mid-year around the world in dud like fashion. Almost all gains for the year for US markets were erased. (They were small to begin with!)
Not to worry, this is a journey not a sprint!
Wharton Radio guest AGAIN
Kent Smetters, a Wharton Professor who hosts a Wharton University Sirius Satellite radio show on Tuesdays, was kind enough to ask me as a guest again yesterday.
After several callers, one with a VERY complicated situation, the spirit of entering this industry to help EVERYONE (or as many as possible) was once again achieved.
Even after all the speaking events, talks in front of many, and a general fondness for public speaking ….
I was wound tight before the show!
Oh…the producer asked if I would do another soon….Sure !
